The7400-year long tree-ring width (TRW) chronology from Torneträsk, northern Sweden. The chronology has been used in a number of Northern Hemisphere climate reconstructions (e.g. Briffa et al 1992, Wilson et al 2015). A climate reconstruction based on maximum density (MXD) captures 63-64% of the inter-annual summer temperature variation.

In the Scandinavian mountains we have developed a network of high quality density and blue intensity data in an attempt to provide a more spatially coherent view of summer (June–August,JJA) temperature variability within the last millennium.

Two examples using Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (ED-XRF); Sulfur and iron accumulation in marine-archaeological shipwrecks in the Baltic Sea and chlorinated solvents from an old industrial site where tree rings had anomalously high concentrations of chlorine (Cl) as an indicator of potential contamination.

Analysis of tree-rings and soil samples using Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) to identify, characterize and date past pollutions events caused by former glass industries in Southern Sweden. This project is a collaboration between the Stockholm University and Linnaeus University.
