At the our department, degree project courses at an first cycle (Bachelor's level) within the campus based Bachelor's programmes in Biogeoscience, Geography and Earth science are normally given only in Swedish.

The Bachelor's programme in Earth Science, Distance Learning, 180 credits can be done in the following subjects and of the following lengths:

The degree project is the practical evidence that the student successfully can conduct an independent and scientific study. The thesis should show that the student grasps the scientific question, can follow the discussion in the scientific literature, can use relevant methods, and can discuss the results of the study and put them in a scientific framework. The thesis is presented at a seminar.

The scientific method 1.5 hp

The scientific method 1.5 hp is obligatory for obtaining the Bachelor of Science degree at the Science faculty at Stockholm University - Scientific method, 1.5 hp

Checklist for degree projects

1. The student identifies an area that he/she would like to do the degree project within, then approaches the course responsible to discuss around subject, supervisor and examiner. The student will then be able to continue the discussion around a thesis project with a suitable supervisor. The student will also get information from the course responsible on who will act as examiner and assessor for the thesis. (If the thesis is written at an external workplace in cooperation with the department, the student will need a supervisor from the external workplace as well as a supervisor from the department.)

The student and the supervisor decide which degree project course is suitable. If in doubt, check with the program responsible or degree project coordinator.

2. The student contacts the degree project coordinator,, to be registered on the chosen course. (This might also be done before receiving final information on examiner and assessor.)

3. The student fills out a Project plan (166 Kb)  for degree projects. This is done in consultation with the supervisor. (The time plan following the Academic calender: 30 credits = one term, 45 credits = one and a half terms and 60 credits = two terms.)

Information for Mac-user: Open the contract using Adobe Reader, then save it. This will produce a pdf-file that can be read also by PC-users.

4. The students sends the contract and the time plan to the degree project coordinator,, for archiving. 

5. The degree project is conducted with an appropriate level of oral and/or written supervision (discussed before the work is commenced), during both the initial phase, the data collection, the analysis, and the writing phase.

6.  The student communicates with the supervisor and examiner to decide on a preliminary submission date and preliminary presentation date. The supervisor should have approved the thesis for presentation before the student submits the thesis to the examiner. (The student is responsible for informing the supervisor, examiner and assessor if the planned presentation date changes.) When approaching submission, the student should arrange for a presentation room by e-mailing Enclose the following information:

  • Your name
  • Your course name
  • Preliminary or final thesis title
  • Date and time for your presentation
  • The name of your supervisor


Agree on a date, time and suitable form of online/distance presentation with his/her supervisor and examiner.

7. The student presents his/her degree work at a seminar. The presentation should be maximum 45 minutes, a suggested distribution of time is:

  • 20-25 min presentation
  • 10 min questions from examiner
  • 10-15 min questions from the audience

Directly following the seminar, the examiner delivers his/her comments on both the written thesis as well as on the oral presentation. Instructions are given regarding any changes that are needed before the thesis can be archived.

8. After the seminar, the examiner grades the degree project thesis according to the grading criteria and in communication with the assessor. The supervisor, is consulted before the final grade is decided on. The grade is then conveyed to the student, the supervisor and the degree project coordinator.

9. When the student has made the last changes to the manuscript (within a month from presenting), the thesis should be sent for archiving to The thesis should be sent as a pdf-file formatted using the  SU-Library Word template (110 Kb) . The degree project coordinator will then prepare the file for archiving, for example adding a serial number. The student will later recieve a pdf-file that can be used for printing paper copies of the thesis or distributing digitally.

During periods of high work load, the response time might be a couple of months.

10. The student has the possibility to upload his/her thesis in the Stockholm university thesis database DiVA - My University.
