Welcome to the Landscape, Environment and Geomatics research unit!

We are a diverse group of researchers that study landscapes, natural ecosystem processes, social-ecological systems and how they shift in space and time. We use ecological and societal data, geo-data, modelling and historical information. Our research focuses on understanding historical, present and future interactions of humans, plants and animals with landscapes and the environment, both in water and on land. We study landscapes and resource management, biodiversity, conservation and ecosystem services as well as feedbacks to climate. We work at multiple scales, from local to global, from genes to biome, from individual to society.

Geomatics is the acquisition, management and analysis of geospatial data. It includes geographical information science (GIS), Earth Observation (EO), surveying and geodesy. Our research develops these methods to better use the capabilities of geodata for a range of applications in Earth and environmental sciences.

Our unit is responsible for two Master's programs (Landscape Ecology and Geomatics with Remote Sensing and GIS) and we are engaged in all three of the department's Bachelor level programs.
