In this project led by Björn Lindahl (SLU) and funded by FORMAS, we bring together expertize on ecosystem modelling and molecular microbial ecology to address major knowledge gaps in our understanding of soil biogeochemical processes in boreal forests. We will first assess how fungal traits change during development of managed forest stands, linking fungal community dynamics to alterations in C and N fluxes and pools. With this new information, a process-based simulation model of the forest ecosystems will be developed. The model will include fungal traits explicitly, allowing us to mechanistically link biological properties to ecosystem-scale C dynamics.
