The automatic meteorological station in Tarfala was established in 1987. It has undergone several minor changes to its current form. The station is based on a Campbell Scientific CR-10 datalogger and the following instruments:
Parameter Sensor type
air temperature PT100/3 1/3 DIN PT100
wind measurements R. M. Young 05103 Wind Monitor
Radiation SP1110 Pyranometer Sensor (Skye Instruments)
Precipitation Campbell tipping bucket precipitation gauge (0.16 mm/tip)
ventilated temperature and humidity Rotronic HygroClip MPH in a Model 43408 Gill Aspirated Radiation Shield
For calibrational purposes, we also have a PT100/3 1/3 DIN PT100 Sensor installed in the old screen used for manual measurements. Manual measurements are still made during summer.

In 1995, at the 50-year anniversary of Stockholm University research activities in the Tarfala valley, the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) installed a meteorological station, thereby making Tarfala an official location for meteorological meassurements. Data from this station is available only through SMHI. Please contact their service department for additional information.

Temperature
Note that the temperature series will be updated approximately once a year, usually after the end of the summer season. Note that the precipitation data is only available from 1987 and onwards during summer. There are breaks in the data from logger failure etc.
